Some good news this morning…Dr. Paul Vespa – the attending physician of Kendra’s team of doctors here at UCLA – has given the go ahead to begin the process of weaning her off the medication that has been keeping her in a coma. This process will be slow…and may have to be reversed if her EEG (brain scan) shows that her seizures may be returning. Also, the lab work seems to indicate that she has an infection in her brain and that that may be one of the external causes of her initial seizures.
The next few days…and possibly weeks…may be unpredictable as to how fast she progresses. She will need to pass through that difficult state of being partially aware of her surroundings but not fully conscious. She will not like all those tubes running in and out of her that are helping her breath and eat.
How long she stays in the Neuro ICU will be based on her seizures being under control as she wakes up and how well she is able to breathe on her own without a ventilator. After leaving the ICU, she will transferred back to the Neurology Unit on the same floor, where her other doctors will need to determine the right balance of medications to maintain a high enough seizure resistance before she will be released to come home.
Depending on her resiliency, Kendra may have some physical therapy to help her with her walking, etc. Having been in bed this long, many of her muscles may have begun to atrophy due to non-use.
We hope that today is the beginning of road to Kendra’s recovery.
